Shark Class Teacher: Jane Tavares (CPLO)
I have been teaching for 30 years.
I studied for my Teaching Degree at Southlands College in Wimbledon part of the Roehampton Institute, University of London. I then started my teaching career in Inner London in 1983 in Paddington and for the next five years spent time teaching in several Junior and Primary schools in Inner London.
In 1988 I applied for a position at Gatten and Lake Primary in Shanklin where I stayed until 1996, during my time there I led a variety of subjects from Geography, English, to Science. I also had responsibility for transition to Middle School.
In 1996 I returned to the mainland and worked in several schools within the Borough of Kingston upon Thames. My introduction to Special Schools came when I was asked to do some supply teaching at a local all age MLD School, I loved it and felt really passionate about the work being done there. This was only a temporary position and though I managed to extend it for about eighteen months it did come to an end.
I returned to work in Local Primary schools and registered as a Family Link carer supporting a child with severe learning and physical disabilities. I then had the opportunity to work part time in the local all age PD school and this led to a full time permanent position. I loved my job and the many new challenges it offered and the children were fantastic, but still had the desire to move back to the Island and work in a Special school setting there. I applied for and was appointed to my position here in 2003.
I am a member of the Leadership Team, having completed my Middle Leaders Course several years ago and in 2011 Leadership Pathways.
I have responsibility for CPD, I am the Maths subject Leader, and EVC and also have a mentoring role, I teach years five /six and have responsibility for transition to Secondary School.
I am very happy here at Medina House it really is the best place to work.
